The Monarchy of Malawi (the Malawian monarchy) was the system of government in which a hereditary monarch was the sovereign of Malawi from 1964 to 1966. Malawi shared the Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms. The monarch's constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Malawi. The royal succession was governed by the English Act of Settlement of 1701.
The monarchy was abolished in 6 July 1966, when Malawi became a republic within the Commonwealth.
History
The Monarch of Malawi was created by the Malawi Independence Act 1964 which transformed the Protectorate of Nyasaland into the independent sovereign constitutional monarchy of Malawi. Malawi adopted a new constitution in 1966 which abolished the monarchy.
