Molly Huddle (born August 31, 1984) is an American long-distance runner who competes in track and cross country running events. Huddle set the American record in the 5000 meters at the 2014 Herculis Diamond League meet in Fontvieille, Monaco (14:42.64).

Huddle currently lives and trains in Providence, Rhode Island, and is sponsored by Saucony.[1] She is coached by Ray Treacy (who is also the Cross Country and Track and Field coach at Providence College) and trains with Kim Smith and Roisin McGettigan.[2]

High School

Huddle attended high school at Notre Dame High School in Elmira, New York, where she won multiple state championships in cross country and track.[1] Her high school did not have a cross country team, so Huddle was the only member. In fact, they had not had a full team since 1987, however, a team was started in the fall of 2014.[2]

College

Huddle went to University of Notre Dame for college (2003-2007), and was a 10-time All American.[1][3] In 2004 Molly Huddle set a University of Notre Dame woman 5000 meters outdoor record at Mt. SAC Relays in 15:32.55.[4]

2010

Huddle set the American record in the 5000 meters at the 2010 Memorial Van Damme Diamond League meet in Brussels, Belgium (14:44.76).[1][5][6]

Huddle's 19th place finish at the 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland helped the American team win a bronze medal.[7] On October 11, 2010, Huddle won her third consecutive USA Women's 10k road race championship in Boston, Massachusetts.[8]

2011

She was the runner-up at the 2011 USA Cross Country Championships, earning a spot for the world championships team.[9] Huddle again helped the American team win a bronze medal at the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, finishing 17th overall.[10] On June 24, 2011, Huddle captured the 5000m at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 15:10.01. Her performance qualified her for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.[11] After battling injuries during the 2011 summer, Huddle failed to qualify during her heat at the World Championships.[12]

2012

At the 2012 USA Cross Country Championships she was leading throughout but was beaten at the finish line by Sara Hall, ending the race as runner-up.[13]

On June 28, 2012 she qualified for the American squad for the 2012 London Olympics in the 5000m.[14] After running 15:02.26 in the Semifinals, Huddle finished 15:20.29 in the Athletics at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's 5000 metres final to finish 11th.

2013

On August 17, 2013, she finished 6th in the women's 5000-meter in the 2013 World Championships in Athletics – Women's 5000 metres in Moscow, the highest American female finish ever in that event at the World Championships.[15] Huddle's time of 15:05.73 earned a 6th place in the final.

On November 17, 2013, Huddle won the 12k U.S. National championship in 37:50.[16] Molly Huddle Sets 12-K World Best.

2014

On May 4, Huddle improved her 10,000 meters time to 30:47.59 in Palo Alto, California at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford University.

On June 27, Huddle won another 5,000 meters US outdoor title in Sacramento, California with a time of 15:01.56, passing Shannon Rowbury in the final meters (15:01.71).[17]

At the Morton Games on July 11, 2014, she won the International Women's Mile in 4:26.8 breaking a stadium record and setting a new pb.[18][19]

On 18 July, Molly ran a personal best mark of 14:42.64[20] to improve her own outdoor 5000 metres[21][22][23][24] United States records in track and field the Diamond League Herculis Monaco.

On November 16, 2014, Huddle won the 12k U.S. National championship in 38:08.[25][26]

2015

On March 15th, Molly beat Kenya’s Joyce Chepkirui with an 11 second margin to win the 2015 New York City Half Marathon in a personal best of 1:08:31.[27] For this victory, Huddle was shown in Marie Claire magazine's "The 8 Greatest Moments for Women in Sports".[28]

Personal life

Huddle is married to Canadian middle distance runner Kurt Benninger, who also ran for University of Notre Dame, where he earned 6 All-American honors in track and cross country.[29]
