Mohinder Singh Gill (born 12 April 1947) is an Indian triple jumper who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics.[1] After placing second in a pre-Olympic meet in Munich, Gill competed while injured.[2]
Gill won two of India's five-ever medals at the Commonwealth Games. Political interference almost cost him the chance to compete, including a false published quote that he did not intend to compete. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi intervened to allow him to compete.[3][4]
Gill won one Gold Medal and one Silver in the Asian Games.[5]
He won 52 major international invitational competitions in North America and Europe, setting 19 new records in the process; in addition, he won 5 NCAA Championships all with new records.[6] Some of those records stood 40 years later.[7]
Gill attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, competing 1968-1971, winning five NCAA championships. He was elected into the Cal Poly Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993, the only Asian to receive that honor.[6]
In 1970, Gill was given India's highest sports award, the Arjuna Award.[3]
