Mohd Effendi Norwawi

Tan Sri Datuk Seri Mohd Effendi Norwawi[1][2] (Malaysian, aged 66) is the Chairman of Bloomberg TV Malaysia.

Career

In partnership with Bloomberg L.P., Bloomberg TV Malaysia will combine the unrivalled resources of Bloomberg with locally produced quality content to deepen and broaden coverage of Malaysia’s vibrant business scene. This first-of-its-kind business channel will fill a gap in the marketplace for high-quality, market-moving business news, where updates on the country’s economic and business performance will be potentially seen by 340 million homes worldwide.[3]

Effendi was a member of Federal Parliament from 1999 to 2004 and later a Senator in the Upper House of Parliament (2006 to 2011). He was Federal Minister in Agriculture (1999–2004) Cabinet of Malaysia 1999 during which time he initiated the modernisation and commercialisation of agriculture. His last post in Cabinet was the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Economic Planning Unit (EPU) (2006- 2008).[4]

Effendi was most recently the Executive Chairman of Encorp Berhad, the company he founded and listed on the main board of Bursa Malaysia in February 2003. Encorp’s main activities are Property Development and Construction, and under his tenure, the company won numerous prestigious awards.[5]

For its flagship development, Encorp Strand in Kota Damansara, Selangor, it won the 2011 Asia-Pacific Property Awards in the Mixed-Use Development category and prior to that, this same development also won The Edge-PEPS Value Creation Excellence Awards 2010 under the Commercial Category. In 2010, Encorp was among the top 27 listed companies in the StarBiz-ICR Awards 2010 in recognition of companies demonstrating outstanding Corporate Responsibility practices.[6]

Effendi has also been recognised with the Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award in conjunction with Enterprise Asia’s Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2012. Following that, he won the Brand Laureate Award for The Most Eminent Brand Iconic Leadership Category. He was also announced the HR leader of the Year Award in conjunction with the Malaysia HR Awards 2011. Effendi holds a Bachelors of Arts (Hons) majoring in Development Administration from the University of Tasmania. He was also conferred an Honorary Degree of the Doctor of Law from the same University in October 2000. He was made Adjunct Professor under the Faculty of Business at the University of Tasmania in November 2008. In 2013, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus made him a local Adjunct Professor in its Faculty of Business and Design.[7]

During his tenure as the Minister of Economic Planning Unit, he initiated the National Implementation Task Force (NITF), the National Implementation Directorate (NID) and National Economic Action Council (NEAC) to accelerate the implementation of high impact national projects. He was also principally involved in co-ordinating the master planning of the five (5) corridor developments in the country. He was appointed as Joint-Chairman with Minister Mah Bow Tan of Singapore for the Malaysia – Singapore Coordination Committee to facilitate the development of the Johor Corridor, Iskandar Regional Development Authority.

Effendi also served as a state assemblyman in Sarawak for nine years (between 1991 to 1999). He retired from politics in 2008.[8]

Previous to that Effendi was Executive Chairman of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), which he led for 15 years (1981 to 1995).[9] During his time the SEDC won the Chief Secretary to the Government's Quality Award and the prestigious Malaysian Prime Minister's Quality Award. He was the Chairman of Bank Utama (now part of the RHB Banking Group) between 1990 and 1995 during which time he led its turnaround into one of the major banks in Malaysia then. He founded NTV7, the private free-to-air TV channel that he has since divested.

Personal life

Effendi is an active sportsman who loves golf, tennis and aikido.[10] He enjoys movies, music, singing, and is a guitar enthusiast. He is married to Datin Sri Tiara Jacquelina, Malaysia's award-winning Actress,[11] Film and Musical Theatre Producer and has three daughters and two sons.
