Mohanganj (Bengali: মোহনগঞ্জ) is an Upazila of Netrokona District in the Dhaka division of Bangladesh. It is one of the 10 Upazilas of Netrakona district. Perhaps, the most important and famous after Netrokona itself. Mohanganj is largely known as the capital city of Lower Bangladesh as it is the economic heart of Lower Bangladesh generally known as Haor (হাওর). This the home of many spiritual personalities who had contributed in Folk Music and various national aspects. Many names can be recalled like Abdul Aziz Khan (Social Worker), Abdur Razzak Master (Politician), Rebecca Momin (Present Honorable Parliament Member and Politician and the list goes on. Alongside, it is the Maternal Home of Humayun Ahmed & Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, unarguably the most famous siblings in Bangladesh. Not only that, Mohanganaj is also famous for its great contribution in the supply of fresh water fishes throughout the country.

Geography

Mohanganj is located at 24°52′00″N 90°58′00″E / 24.8667°N 90.9667°E. It has 24011 households and a total area of 243.2 km². The Upazila situated just at the north Barhatta and Sunamganj. In the east, it neighbored by Khaliajuri and Sunamganj. Mohanganj is also accompanied by Madanand Atpararespectively in south and west.

Mohanganj is a true example of riverine Bangladesh. This part of Bangladesh is beautified by the famous Kangsha River (Bengali: কংস নদী) which also the backbone of transportation and economic system. Except this, numerous canals, small rivers crisscrossed that holy land and established itself as an important Upazila of rural Bangladesh.

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Mohanganj has a population of 129415. Males constitute 51.4% of the population, and females 48.6%. Upazila's 18+ population is 65417. Mohanganj has an average literacy rate of 27.8% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]

Archaeological heritage and relics

There is an ancient fort at the village Betham (Sultan Alauddin Hussain Shah period), Shekhe Bari Mosque (same period), and Daulatpur Temple (876 BS).

Main occupations

Agriculture 48.25%, fishing 2.62%, agricultural laborer 21.21%, wage laborer 2.53%, commerce 9.84%, service 3.49% and others 12.06%.

Land

Cultivable land 24864.43 hectares, fallow land 390.84 hectares; single crop 52%, double crop 38% and treble crop land 10%; land under irrigation 71%.

Communication and transportation

It has a strong waterway connection with Sylhet, Sunamganj, Bhairab Bazar and Dhaka. Alongside, the road network system connected it with Netrokona, Mymensingh and all the way to Dhaka. That extensive road network system enables anyone to travel from Mohanganj to any corner of the country with great comfortableness.

Pucca 16 km, semi pucca 37 km and mud road 397 km; railways 3 km; waterways 12-nautical-mile (22 km). Also it has a broad Train line access. One of them is classified as Intercity Train Service which one comes from Dhaka to Mohanganj named as Haor Express.
