He is a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and leads the Barisan Nasional coalition in the Johor State Legislative Assembly Before becoming Chief Minister in 2013, he was a federal government minister (2004 to 2013) and Member of Parliament for Johor Bahru (1990 to 2004) and Pasir Gudang (2004 to 2013).
Before entering politics, Khaled studied to be a lawyer and worked for the Malaysian oil giant Petronas. In the 1980s he worked as an adviser to Shahrir Abdul Samad, then a federal minister. Khaled entered the federal parliament himself at the 1990 election, at the age of 31, winning the seat of Johor Bahru against a Semangat 46 candidate. In 2004 he became the Minister for Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development, and in 2008 was appointed as the Minister for Higher Education. After 23 years in federal politics, he shifted to the Johor State Legislative Assembly at the 2013 election, winning the seat of Permas. The Barisan Nasional coalition held its majority in the assembly, and Khaled took over as the state's Chief Minister.[1]
