Miss World 1996, the 46th edition of the Miss World pageant, took place on 23 November 1996 in the city of Bangalore, India. 88 contestants from all over the world took part in the prestigious pageant. By the end of the night, 18-year-old Irene Skliva of Greece took home the title. She was crowned by Miss World 1995, Jacqueline Aguilera of Venezuela.

Debuts
- Bonaire, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia competed in Miss World for the first time.
Returning countries
- Grenada last competed in 1970 (with their representative Jennifer Hosten winning Miss World), and would not compete again until 2007 with Vivian Charlott Burkhardt making the semi-finals.
- Yugoslavia last competed in 1991 after a 5-year civil war in which its nation was divided into independent states.
- Uganda and Uruguay last competed in 1993.
- Kenya last competed in 1994.
Withdrawals and Nations not competing
- Bahamas and Cayman Islands did not compete because of financial problems.
Historical significance
- Preliminaries were shot in India and in Seychelles.
- Macau, Guiomar Madeira da Silva Pedruco, was the last of her four siblings in the Pedruco family who competed in Miss World. She then went on to compete in Miss Chinese International the following year, and make it to the top 5.
- Dominican Republic returns to the semi-finals for the first time since Mariasela Alvarez won the first Miss World title for the Dominican Republic in 1982.
- Nigeria's Emma Komlosy is the daughter of Patti Boulaye, and the first mixed-race winner (half-Hungarian) of her country's national pageant.
- Thailand's Sirinya Winsiri is half-American with the name Cindy Burbridge.

Controversy
The event was organized by ABCL which was led by Amitabh Bachchan.[2] The beauty pageant saw resistance by several groups due to the perceived culture clash.[3][4][5][6] However due to support of the local government, the event was held successfully.
