Miss Universe 1981, the 30th Miss Universe pageant, was held at Minskoff Theater, New York City in the USA, on July 20, 1981. Nineteen-year-old Irene Sáez of Venezuela was crowned as Miss Universe 1981.[1] She was crowned by Shawn Weatherly from USA. There were 77 contestants competing for the crown, but Miss Mauritius got homesick and withdrew.[2] The pageant originally was scheduled to be held in Guatemala City, Guatemala. However, for financial and political reasons, Miss Universe was moved to New York City.[3]
