Miss Tourism International is an annual international beauty contest run by the D’ Touch International Sdn Bhd Foundation.[1][2] The contest began in 1994 in Kuching, Malaysia. Malaysia hosts Miss Tourism International every year, except in 2006 it was held outside Malaysia for the first time, in Guangzhou, China. The beauty pageant was not held in 1996, 1997 and 2007. Miss Tourism International in Sri Lanka was held three times (1993, 1996 & 2002).[3] The pageant not held again in Sri Lanka, but others exist in other countries.

The present Miss Tourism International 2014 title holder is Faddya Isabel Halabi from Venezuela.[4][5] The 2013 pageant (which determined the winners for 2014) also had four runner-up contestants.[6]

History

The Miss Tourism International world final is a New Year’s Eve pageant that plays host to many international beauty queens from around the world. The 2014 event will have contestants from 59 countries.[7]

The inauguration of Miss Tourism International was held in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia in 1994. Introduced by the president and franchise owner, Datuk Danny Ooi, today, Miss Tourism International contest has involved contestants in over 76 countries.[8] In 2002, the pageant had 26 participants from various countries.[1] In 2002, the first live internet broadcast of the event occurred.[1]

Cultural exchange

The 2002 pageant was ascribed the theme "bringing the world to Malaysia".[1] It has been described as conducive to encouraging cultural exchange in Malaysia per participants in the pageant being from various countries.[1] At past pageants, such as the 2002 one, contestants have been given tours of Malaysian areas of interest, are introduced to various food delicacies, and are encouraged to engage in cultural exchange by discussing their native countries to "promote understanding and goodwill".[1] The event is televised in Malaysia and "broadcasted to participating countries".[1] In 2002, the pageant was supported by the Malaysian Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism, and part of its focus is to serve to promote tourism in Malaysia.[1]
