Miroslav Cerar Jr. (Slovene pronunciation: [ˈmíːrɔslaw ˈt͡sɛ̀ːrar ˈjúːnjɔr],[1] known as Miro Cerar [ˈmíːrɔ ˈt͡sɛ̀ːrar];[2] born on 25 August 1963 in Ljubljana) is a Slovenian lawyer and politician who has been Prime Minister since 18 September 2014. With a non-political background and as one who was relatively new to politics at the time of his appointment as Prime Minister, Cerar leads the mainly central Party of Miro Cerar.
Cerar is the son of Miroslav Cerar Sr., Olympic gymnastics champion and lawyer, and Zdenka Cerar, former Minister of Justice and chief prosecutor.[3]
Cerar was a professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana[4] and a legal adviser to the Slovenian Parliament.[5]
Following the resignation of Alenka Bratušek’s government in May 2014, Cerar announced that he would enter national politics.[6] On 2 June 2014, he formed a new political party called Stranka Mira Cerarja / Stranka modernega centra (Party of Miro Cerar / Party of Modern Center).[7] In the July election, Cerar's party won a leading total 36 of 90 seats in the parliament,[5] with Cerar being later appointed prime minister-designate.[8]
