The District of Mirditë (Albanian: Rrethi i Mirditës) is one of the thirty-six districts of Albania, part of Lezhë County. It has a population of 26,668[1] (2010 estimate), and an area of 867 km². It is in the north of the country, and its capital is Rrëshen. The district consists of the following municipalities:
During the time of Ottoman rule, Mirdita, along with the surrounding tribal regions, obtained a status of semi-independence from the Ottomans and managed to preserve their Roman Catholic faith. The Muslim northern Albanian tribes participated in the Ottoman campaigns against Catholic Mirdita tribe in 1876 devastating their territory.[2]
