The Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine is the central government ministry of Sri Lanka responsible for health. The ministry is responsible for formulating and implementing national policy on health, nutrition, disease prevention, indigenous medicine and other subjects which come under its purview.[1] Under the Constitution of Sri Lanka provincial councils are responsible for running public hospitals but some hospitals, known as line ministry hospitals, are the responsibility of the Ministry of Health in Colombo. There were 49 line ministry hospitals in 2011 which included all teaching hospitals in the country.[2] Together they had 33,000 beds (47% all beds in public hospitals).[2] The current Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine and State Minister of Health are Rajitha Senaratne and Hasen Ali respectively.[3] The ministry's secretary is D. M. R. B. Dissanayake.[4]
