Minamiise (南伊勢町 Minamiise-chō) is a town located in Watarai District, Mie Prefecture, Japan. As of September 2012, the town had an estimated population of 13,952 and a population density of 57.4 persons per km² (148.7 per mi²). The total area is 242.98 km² (93.82 mi²).

Geography

Minamiise occupies a ria coastal region with numerous deeply indented bays located in the eastern part of the Kii Peninsula in central Mie Prefecture, along the Kumano Sea. Parts of Minamiise are inside Ise-Shima National Park.

Weather

The weather in Minamiise is generally mild and temperate. January though February average temperatures of -1 °C (33 °F) to 9 °C (48 °F) and light rainfall. Temperatures begin to rise in March with an average high of 12 °C (53 °F) and lows of 4 °C (40 °F) and a marked rise in rainfall. This pattern continues though June with average temperatures in April of 18 and 9 °C (64 and 48 °F), and in May of 22 and 14 °C (72 and 57 °F). Rainfall generally levels out though June and July and the temperature continues to increase to 26 and 19 °C (79 and 66 °F) and 30 and 23 °C (86 and 73 °F) respectively. August is the hottest month with average temperatures of 31 and 25 °C (88 and 77 °F). The temperature will begin to drop again in September, along with a large increase in rainfall. Temperatures in September average 27 and 20 °C (81 and 68 °F). Rainfall decreases perceptibly sharply though December with temperatures averaging 22 and 14 °C (72 and 57 °F), 17 and 8 °C (63 and 46 °F) and 13 and 3 °C (55 and 37 °F) for each month respectively.

History

Minamiise was once part of the old Shima Province, and became a part of Ise Province during the Sengoku period. The current town of Minamiise was formed on October 1, 2005 though the merger of the towns of Nansei and Nantō.

Economy

The economy of Minamiise is dominated by commercial fishing. Most of the business center around main town centers of Nansei and Nanto.
