Mike Terrana (January 21, 1960) is an American hard rock and heavy metal drummer. His first professional work was in 1984 with the MCA band Hanover Fist from Toronto,[1] after which he recorded and toured with other bands, playing many styles of music in Western New York state. Between 1987 and 1997, he was based in Los Angeles and worked with various virtuoso guitarists, including Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony Macalpine, Steve Lukather, and bands like Kuni and Beau Nasty.
In 1997 Terrana moved to Europe, first in the Netherlands for six months and then Germany.[2] He worked with the German bands Rage, Gamma Ray, Savage Circus, Axel Rudi Pell, Roland Grapow and Masterplan.[3]
He is currently a member of Tarja Turunen's support band, and has performed on her last two solo releases, What Lies Beneath and Colours in the Dark.
Terrana is also engaged in projects in the instrumental fusion genre and performs drum clinics around the world for DrumCraft and Paiste cymbals.
Style
Terrana is well known and admired for his fast and furious drumming, which includes rapid solos. He is also a heavy user of accent drums and cymbals like gong drums and splashes, adding to his sound. When playing he often prefers to play mixtures of rapid beats on bass drums complimented by fast beats alternating between the toms and snare.
Equipment
Terrana endorses Drum Craft drums, a new German company, and states being very happy with their quality and tone, describing them as "the sound I've always been looking for. They never let me down." He also endorses Evans drum heads and Vic Firth drum sticks, with whom he has his own signature pair of sticks designed to his specifications, which are well favored among the drumming community. He is now also endorsing Paiste cymbals (all cymbals in custom white colorsound):
- 14" Signature sound edge hi-hats
