Mike Slattery is a Democratic member of the Kansas House of Representatives, representing the 24th district. He has served since 2009, and is the son of Jim Slattery, who served the 2nd District of Kansas from 1983-1995. Mike is currently the youngest member of the Kansas Legislature, and the only Democrat to defeat an incumbent in the Kansas House of Representatives in 2008. Mike is currently the only Kansas House of Representatives member Democrat from Johnson County, and the only Democrat elected in Johnson County in a partisan election.[1]

Mike received a Bachelor's degree in Integrated Science and Technology with an emphasis in Energy and Environmental Policy from James Madison University. He works for J.E. Dunn Construction in Project Management. During his time with J.E. Dunn Construction, Mike has worked on projects including the H&R Block World Headquarters, Applebee's Headquarters, and the Belton, Missouri City Hall and Annex.[2]

Issue positions

Slattery's legislative priorities include supporting public education, alternative energy production, health care reform, and economic development. During the 2009 Legislative Session, Mike worked on major initiatives including the Clean Indoor Air Act and the Community Improvement District Act.[3]

Community Service & Involvement

Since their marriage, Mike and Jenny have continued to dedicate their lives to serving the community by volunteering with many organizations and causes, including traveling to Almaty, Kazakhstan where they served the needs of orphans for three months. Mike and Jenny were part of the leadership team of the National Prayer Breakfast of Australia. Locally, they have volunteered at The Learning Center, the community United Way chapter, and the Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides fundraiser.

Mike serves on the City of Mission's Sustainable Governance Task Force, is an executive board member of Young Life Shawnee Mission, is a Young Leaders Group board member of the Urban Land Institute and a member of the Young Leaders Society for United Way. Mike is also representing the City of Mission in the Mid-American Regional Council's Academy for Sustainable Communities Leadership Series.[4]
