Midnight Sun is the fifth mini album (counted as fifth, sixth overall) by South Korean boy band Beast. It was released on July 22, 2012 with the song "Beautiful Night" as the promotional track.[1] The song "Midnight" was released one week before the mini album's release, on July 15, 2012, as a pre-release single.[2]

Background

On May 16, 2012, A hint about their comeback in South Korea was notified by the B2UTYs (Beast fan-club name) in some tweets of Cube Entertainment's CEO Hong Seong-sung. In one of his tweets, he replied “All you B2UTYs, we are planning on making the greatest comeback ever known”.[3]

In July 3, the group members were spotted shooting a music video in New York during July 1 until July 7. It was the first time that the group shot a music video outside South Korea.[4] The group made the official announcement of their comeback in South Korea on July 11 via Google+. Titled Hang Out Live on Air, the group announced that their new mini album will be released in July 22.[5] On the same day, a photo teaser showing the EP's name, with the title "Midnight Sun", and the release date, July 22, 2012, was revealed on Beast's official Korean website.[6] One day later, on July 12, Cube Entertainment announced that the song "Midnight" will be released as a pre-release single on July 15.[7] In July 13, the first bunch of teaser images were revealed at Cube Entertainment's Facebook account.[8] In July 14, a teaser video of the music video of "Beautiful Night" was released. In July 15, "Midnight" was released digitally on South Korea music portal sites. On the same day, a theme music video of the song was also released.[9] In July 17, Cube Entertainment revealed the title track of the mini album, the song "Beautiful Night", and revealed two teaser photos of the members Doo-joon, Jun-hyung and Dong-woon.[10][11][12] On the next day, two more teaser photos were revealed, featuring the members Hyun-seung, Yo-seob and Gi-kwang.[13][14] In July 19, it was revealed the mini album's tracklist, as well the composers and writers of the songs.[15] In July 20, a teaser of the music video for "Beautiful Night" was released on the group's YouTube account. In July 22, both EP and music video for "Beautiful Night" were released simultaneously.

Cube Entertainment stated that the six tracks of the EP tell various stories of 'love, music and life', which is the concept of the EP.

Composition

The EP is composed of six tracks. Most part of the songs were written by the member Yong Jun-hyung. The title track "Beautiful Night" was written by 4realz and composed by Goodnite and Sleepwell. This is the first time that the group did not used a song produced by Shinsadong Tiger as title track. "Midnight" was written by Yong Jun-hyung, Choi Kyu-sung and Shinsadong Tiger. "Not Me" was written by Rado and Jun-hyung. "When I Miss You" was written by Jun-hyung and Choi Kyu-sung. "The Day You Rest" and "Dream Girl" were both written and composed by Jun-hyung and Kim Tae-joo. A Japanese version of the song "Midnight" (Japanese: Midnight -星を数える夜-) will be released as the group's third Japanese single.

Release

In addition to the standard issue, a limited edition of the album was released on August 8, 2012 with the CD, an 84-page photo booklet, a card warllet, 12 star cards, a 3D card, a golden card with serial code and a mobile cleaner.

A Japanese edition of the EP was released in September 26, 2012 in 2 editions, with the song "I Knew It", released as a digital single in South Korea,[16] included on the tracklist and an edition with a special DVD including the music videos from the EP.[17]

Promotions

The group started promoting the song "Beautiful Night" in July 27, 2012, on KBS's Music Bank.[18] The song is also being promoted on the shows Music Core,[19] Inkigayo[20] and M! Countdown. The song "Not Me" was used for the comeback week performances. For Inkigayo comeback performance, the group used their performance of "Beautiful Night" in the guerilla concert at Gwanghwamun Square.[21][22]
