Micromax (Scott Wright) is a fictional character, a mutant superhero of the Marvel universe.

Publication history

Micromax was created by Alan Davis and first appeared in Excalibur vol. 1 #44.

Fictional character biography

Prior to the discovery of his mutant abilities, Scott Wright was a disk jockey. However, with the discovery of his powers he quickly became a special British government operative for M.I.6, a secret British national security unit, under the name Micromax.

He was first seen mistaking Rachel Summers for a burglar, battling her, and mistakenly trying to arrest her for robbery.[1] He later was back up for a disastrous mission with his superior officer Brigadier Theobold Blott, several psychics and a team of F.I.6 'Mediators'. They were assigned to track down the perpetrator of the previous thefts and initially erroneously accused Nightcrawler of sabotage. After that mishap, they were overpowered by a servant creature of Necrom, a powerful sorcerer.[2] They later encountered Necrom himself, and Micromax was the only one to survive the mission, due to his shrinking abilities. He shrunk too quickly and passed out; although he was paralyzed by Necrom, he still escaped.[3] He then unsuccessfully attempted to kill Necrom. Necrom came away with the impression Micromax has very little viable life force.[4] Micromax later became mind-controlled by Brain Drain to attempt to assassinate the British Prime Minister, but this was thwarted by Aurora.[5] Micromax later helped Excalibur members Kylun and Feron battle Necrom, using his powers to grow to a massive size and crush Necrom, stunning him temporarily and allowing the other heroes to mount an offense.

Micromax later participates in battling the threat from the politician Orpington Smythe. Smythe was using manipulation, torture and murder in an attempt to control all the governmental agencies that dealt with super-powered happenings. Micromax was captured for Nigel Orpington-Smythe by the R.C.X.[6] He was subjected to medical tests at the Cloud Nine facility.[7] Excalibur and a mutiny from within Smythe's own ranks eventually end Smythe's threat.

After a few missions with Excalibur, he resigns from the FI6 police of the United Kingdom force to join the Brand Corporation in New Jersey. He keeps using his super-hero identity from time to time, and even helps the Avengers face the invasion of Kang the Conqueror.[8]

He becomes involved in a battle with X-Force and the surviving original X-Men over the fate of the '198', a group of mutants being forcibly detained on the grounds of the X-Mansion. At the request of the British government Micromax joined O*N*E*,[9] a policing force against unruly mutants. This team is fronted by Bishop with the support of Sabra.[10] During the fight he is stabbed in the chest by Shatterstar. The 198 escape. He receives medical attention and survives the attack.

Micromax has also been shown to be working with a group of vigilantes, called the Vanguard.[11]

Powers and abilities

Micromax is a mutant with the ability to increase, decrease or redistribute his body mass, allowing for dramatic size change. He can become small as roughly half an inch,[12] or as tall as 65 feet in height.[13] His strength is proportionate to his size and at top size and density he can withstand the pressure from a 50-ton weight, and strike with a similar level of force.[14] He can attain a limited degree of shapeshifting by redistributing his body mass. Normally, Micromax is a short, pot-bellied balding man; in everyday life he uses his powers to become taller and robust and to give himself a full head of hair.[15][16]

Micromax is a good hand-to-hand combatant, and has been trained by F.I.6.
