Michael Onovwigun is an English football central midfielder who plays for Chesterfield. He is a product of the academy at Brentford.

Playing career

Brentford

Born in Clapham, London,[1] Onovwigun began his career in the academy at Brentford, signing scholarship forms in the summer of 2012.[2] After featuring regularly for the Development Squad in friendly matches during the summer of 2012, Onovwigun was called into the first team squad for a pre-season friendly versus Wycombe Wanderers on 7 August 2012, replacing Jake Reeves after 73 minutes of the 4-1 victory.[3] Onovwigun made over 50 appearances for the youth team and 9 for the Development Squad between 2011 and 2014.[4][5][6][7] He departed the club at the end of the 2013/14 season, after failing to be offered a professional contract.[8]

Chesterfield

In July 2014, Onovwigun joined the Development Squad at League One side Chesterfield on trial. He made a substitute cameo for the first team in the second half of a 3-1 pre-season friendly victory over Aston Villa on 30 July.[9] The following day, Onovwigun signed a one-year professional contract, with the option of a further year and was awarded the number 21 shirt.[10] He later said, "hopefully I can break in to the team, get a new deal after this season and become a first team player for Chesterfield".[11] Onovwigun received his maiden call into the first team squad for a league match versus Rochdale on 16 August. He made his professional debut when he came on as an 89th minute substitute for Jimmy Ryan in a 2-1 win.[12] His second appearance came with a slightly longer cameo in a 2-0 Football League Trophy first round defeat to Scunthorpe United on 1 September.[13]

Sheffield (loan)

Onovwigun joined Northern Premier League Division One South side Sheffield on a 28-day loan on 7 November 2014.[14] He made his debut the following day, coming on as a 61st minute substitute for Richard Stirrup in a 4-2 defeat to Romulus.[15] The deal was later extended until 3 January 2015.[16] Onovwigun's final appearance came with a start in a 2-1 defeat to Lincoln United on 20 December.[17] He made eight appearances and scored two goals for the Club.

Stalybridge Celtic (loan)

On 6 February 2015, Onovwigun and Chesterfield teammate Charlie Dawes signed on a one-month loan for Conference North side Stalybridge Celtic.[18] He made his debut the following day,[19] coming on for Paul Ennis after 69 minutes of a 4-3 defeat to local rivals Stockport County.[20] It proved to be his only appearance and he departed on 27 February.[21]
