Michael O'Donoghue (born 18 January 1996) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Colchester United. He came through the ranks at the Colchester United academy having previously been with Reading and Leyton Orient.

Career

O'Donoghue joined League One club Colchester United in the summer of 2013, signing a Professional Development Contract with the club's academy. He signed from Leyton Orient,[3] having previously been on the books at Reading.[4]

While playing for the Colchester United under-18 side, O'Donoghue helped to earn the club a league and cup double during the 2013–14 season. He provided the assist for Macauley Bonne in the Youth Alliance Cup final against Bradford City at Valley Parade on 29 April 2014 in a 4–2 win for Colchester.[5]

Following injuries to central defenders Magnus Okuonghae and Frankie Kent, O'Donoghue was drafted into the starting line-up for Colchester's fixture against Barnsley on 14 November 2014. He made his debut and played the full 90 minutes in the game that Colchester would eventually lose 3–2.[6]

O'Donoghue was ruled out for the remainder of the 2014–15 season in December 2014 after rupturing cruciate ligaments during a training session with the club.[7]
