Michael Bruce Eisen (born April 13, 1967) is an American biologist. He is an Investigator and Professor of Genetics, Genomics and Development at University of California, Berkeley.[2][3][4][5][6][7]
Education
Eisen completed his PhD at Harvard University under the supervision of Don Craig Wiley while studying Influenza A virus Proteins.[8]
Research
His academic research[9][1][10] focuses on the evolution of gene regulation.[11][12][13][14]
Open Access advocacy
Throughout his career he has been an advocate for "open science", which is the free release of the material and intellectual product of scientific research. He is a leading advocate of open access scientific publishing,[15][16][17] and is co-Founder of Public Library of Science (PLOS) and serves on the PLOS board, the Academic Steering & Advocacy Committee of Open Library of Humanities,[18] and is an adviser to Science Commons. His brother Jonathan Eisen is also a biologist.
In 2012 Eisen began protesting against the Research Works Act as part of his appeal to promote open access to information.[19]
Awards and honors
In 2002, Eisen was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award (Bioinformatics).
Personal life
Eisen is the brother of Jonathan Eisen.
