Metropolitan University (Bengali: মেট্রোপলিটন ইউনিভার্সিটি) or MU is a private university in Sylhet and was established in 2003 by an eminent social worker, Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury with the approval of the Ministry of Education under the Private University Act, 1992 (amended in 1998). This is a social commitment of Metropolitan University mainly to our nation for promoting better education to meet the changing needs of the globe in the 21st century. The University will serve the citizens of the home country and also of other countries through its instructions, research and outreach programmes and prepare them to meet the challenges of the global economy successfully.[1]

Achievements

Metropolitan University has been approved and accredited by the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. Honourable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of the University.

Besides, Metropolitan University is an Institutional Member of the Association of Management Development Institution in South Asia (AMDISA) and the Member of Association of Management Development Institution in Bangladesh.

The Chairman of Accreditation Service of International College (ASIC), Mr. Moris Dimok inspected Metropolitan University on 6th October 2014 and expressed satisfaction by observing the atmosphere of University. On December 19, 2009 Professor Dr. Ataul Karim, Vice President (Research), Old Dominion University, USA paid a visit to Metropolitan University. Prof. Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, Head of the Department of Computer Science & Technology of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet also visited the Project Fair of Metropolitan University.

The First Convocation of Metropolitan University was held in the year 2010 and Second Convocation on 31st January, 2015.[2]

Research and Publication

Almost all the departments of the university are active in research oriented works and projects. Both the teachers and students frequently published various kind of research article in various international journals and conferences. The university also published a journal called Metropolitan University Journal in every two year.

Admission of Foreign Students

Foreign students meeting equivalent admission qualification are eligible for admission as regular students or as special students for full duration or a part of the duration and may acquire transfer credits. In case of the latter, the recommended minimum duration of residence in the first year and the second year is one term. The University may enroll foreign students under an exchange programme established between The Metropolitan University and students' concerned University.

Admission is also open to all those who wish to pursue courses or a course as non-degree students to improve their knowledge or acquire new skills. Students are also admitted for specific certificate or diploma courses.


Scholarships

Metropolitan University offers various scholarship schemes to financially support the meritorious students. A student may avail the scholarship by his/her previous performance or current performance.

Credit Transfer

Credit Transfer to the universities in the USA, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many other European universities are available for all our undergraduate & postgraduate programs. Besides Student with good academic records from other recognized University are eligible to transfer of their credits to Metropolitan University. The transferred students must have transcripts of courses and grades together with the copies of previous academic records. These transcripts will be evaluated by equivalence committee of the University for necessary action.
