Appearance

« Usual twelve-year-old — anyway looks usual. Skinny, with narrow shoulders. Isn't very tall." « And his looks … his looks, perhaps, are not without a highlight. The edge of a forward tooth chopped off on a third, long fair-coloured hair, hid behind in a tail. » « (Eyes) slanting, not really symmetric and absolutely don't have a certain color. » (Methodius Buslaev. The Magician of Midnight) At the age of twelve, Methodius Buslaev discovers that he is the future ruler of the darkness, who had won his power at the time of his birth - in the hour of the solar Eclipse. At the invitation of the witch Ulita, Buslaev comes to the Moscow residence of the darkness to be educated by the Baron of darkness, swordsman Arey . On the day of his thirteenth birthday Methodius has to pass through the labyrinth of the temple of the Eternal Tiltyard, and take something that was kept there since the birth of the world. At the same time Daphne, guardian of the light, who lived in the garden of Eden, is sent out into the human world, so she accompanies Methodius and takes lessons from Arey. So begins the story of Methodius Buslaev. He will have to outlive multiple challenges before he makes a final choice and chooses the side that will allow his to follow his own path.

Characters

Methodius Buslaev (shortly Meth (Mef)) - the person who has become the successor of Darkness because of a total eclipse of the Sun when he was born. He was born on April, 13th 1991. Parents: Igor and Zoe (nicknamed Zozo) Buslaevs. Appearance: long, light-brown hair, narrow, slanted eyes which change colour depending on his mood. Has a scar on his cheek from fight with Yarros. One of his front teeth has broken-off tip.

Daphne - a Light Guardian. In the first book she was stated to have the appearance of a 13-year-old girl, but she's really about 13 000 years old (Light Guards age 1000 times slower). However, spending too much time on the Earth made her age faster, thus she looks about the same age as Methodius. She has a pseudonym "Dasha Pimenova", used in her fake passport. As all Light Guardians, she can use her wing medallion to summon a pair of wings to fly with, and has a magical flute as a weapon (using music to produce various offensive and defensive magic). Her wings have some black feathers in them, due to her not being completely pure of heart, as she could be quite the hooligan and vindictive. In the first book she came to Earth due to the machinations of Ligul and ends up as the guardian of methodius at the end of it. She is destined to love Methodius for all eternity, because she had placed her pendant around his neck to save both him and her at the end of the first book.

Irka - Methodius' friend, a handicapped girl. She had lost the use of her legs when she was young, in a car crash that killed her parents. After that she lived with her grandmother. She became the Loner Valkyrie in the third book, after the previous, mortally wounded, Loner Valkyrie transferred the title to her. Due to the power of the gift, Irka regained the use of her legs, but it was at a price. No one who knew her previously could know that she was a valkyrie. The magic of her title would kill any who came to know that.

Ares - the former instructor of Methodius, a Dark Guardian. He was the most skilled swordsman of all the Dark guardians, and had had a wife and daughter, who he had attempted to hise from the dark.

Ulita Maksimova - Ares' pupil, a witch. Stated to be 20 years in the first book. Has an outstanding personality, and is quite fat. She loves to eat and gets very upset when someone remarks on her weight. She lost her eidos as young child, due to her witch-mother attempting a curse. She is in love with Essiorth.

Essiorth - A Light Guardian, Daphne's protector. He was incarnated in the body of a deceased biker, named Pavel Nikitin. Due to that, has a liking to the bikes. He's also an artist and has a fondness for making sculptures. He is in love with Ulita.

Depressnyak - a cat of Daphne and Methodius. He was born as a cross between an Eden cat and a Tartarus cat. He is almost bald and has a pair of wings. He is a biovampire and anyone who touches him loses any good moods they may have for about a week. He likes to drink acid and he is highly temperamental and loves to fight. According to Daphne, at some ppint he liked to eat dogs.

Ligul - the hypocritical dwarf, another Darkness Guardian. He is the head of the Chanceelory of the Dark. He is a humpback. He dreams to receive the eidos of Methodius (an eidos is in the context of the book, a soul). In his youth, he spent some years on the Bald Mountain, gathering Cyclops' earwax as somebody has convinced him that it will cause him to gain height. He disliked Ares and constantly spied on him. They maintained an armed neutrality, most of the time, but Ligul seized every chance that came by to get rif of Ares, for instance in "The Ticket to the Bald Mountain".

Praskovya - a pupil of Ligul, is a couple of weeks younger than Methodius. She cannot speak, and has to use golems to speak through them. She is extremely powerful, and her laughter or tears are equivalent to tornados. She has acquired the powers that the other three heirs of Quondon had.
