MetaMed Research is a medical consulting firm founded in 2012 by Jaan Tallinn (co-founder of Skype and Kazaa),[1][2] Michael Vassar[3] and Zvi Mowshowitz,[1] with startup funding from Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel.[2] It provides high-end personalized medical research services. MetaMed analyzes medical literature on its clients' conditions and provides reports with detailed analyses of potential causes, possible treatments and their chances of success, and the reliability of relevant medical studies. It also assesses the expected value of various tests, and creates a map of correlations between possible medical conditions.
Purpose
The founders of MetaMed created it to provide an alternative to "typical one-size-fits-all healthcare".[4] To this end, MetaMed's researchers gather detailed medical information as possible on each client, using this as the basis for the creation of personalized research reports for various conditions (or, in some cases, for the purpose of client performance enhancement).[5]
Services
MetaMed's personalized medical research services are targeted at the market for concierge medicine, with prices ranging from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands.[6][7][8] According to an NPR interview with a MetaMed patient, personalized medical research was the "only thing that has helped him" after seeing numerous doctors.[6] One aim of the company is to aid doctors with advanced artificial intelligence and data from information experts.[9] Metamed states that its researchers are drawn from top universities, as well as technology companies such as Google.[8]
