Merrylands railway station is located in the western Sydney suburb of Merrylands. Physically located on the Old Main South line, it is served by T2 South Line and T5 Cumberland Line services of the Sydney Trains network. It serves an area which is residential and commercial. The station has two side platforms.

History

A goods siding was provided at the location of Merrylands station in 1878, and a platform located on the up side in 1880[1] on what was then the 'Main South Line'. The line was duplicated in 1891. With the opening of the new 'Main South' between Lidcombe and Cabramatta via Regents Park in 1924, this section of track became known as the 'Old Main South'. In 1929 the line through Merrylands was electrified. In 1969, the level crossing was closed, replaced by the Mombri St overpass. In 1972, the signal box at Merrylands closed with operations transferred to Granville signal box.[2] In 1996, the Harris Park to Merrylands 'Y-link' was opened, allowing direct services to operate between Merrylands and Harris Park on the Main Western Line and the formation of what is now known as the Cumberland Line. The station since underwent substantial renovations which were concluded by early 2007. Previously, several sidings for goods trains were provided, however all have now been removed.

Platforms and services

On weekdays the station is served by four South Line trains per hour between the city and Glenfield or Campbelltown, and two Cumberland Line trains per hour in each direction for most of the day, with additional trains provided during peak hours. On weekends the station is served by two to four South Line trains per hour in each direction, with the Cumberland Line not operating on weekends or holidays.
