Melona is a South Korean melon-flavored ice pop, manufactured by the Binggrae Co. Ltd. Although the product is called "Melona" and is identified by its melon flavor, the ice pop also comes in other fruit flavors. Each 80 ml/2.7 fl oz bar contains 130 kcal of energy as of 2009.[1]

Melona is popular in South Korea, where it broke many sales records upon its introduction in the 1990s.[2] Melona is also sold in various countries of the world, including United States, Australia, Brazil, Singapore, Paraguay, Philippines, China, Argentina and New Zealand usually in Asian markets or Korean retail outlets only. As of early 2011, Melona was sold in Canada through many grocery stores, and is available in melon, strawberry, banana and mango flavors.

History

Melona launched in 1992 and intended to cover the domestic market with green color. Thanks to its smooth and rich taste of real melon flesh, the product set the best selling record in the domestic "Popsicle" market, selling 280 million bars in 1994, and has been one of the steadiest sellers so far.[3]

Popularity

Melona has continued to keep its popularity among many generations. It is generally sold in convenience stores in South Korea. It can also be found in increasing numbers of stores around the world. According to data from Family Mart, Melona was among its top ten products sold in 2007. It was ranked eighth.[4]
