Meleka (born c.1988) is a singer/songwriter who first came to public attention after winning the annual talent competition HUGO Urban Rules in 2008. The event saw her performing for music industry experts and stars Estelle and ex-Mystique singer Sabrina Washington. Upon winning, Meleka had the chance to sing on stage with the pair.[1]

Biography

After taking part in the competition, Meleka went on to appear on the track "Scars" by Basement Jaxx, which also featured UK rapper Chipmunk and American singer Kelis. This was followed by an appearance on UK artist Don E’s song "Time Is Now", also featuring ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena.[2]

Meleka’s debut single "Go", a Funky House song produced by the Crazy Cousinz, was released in September 2009 and reached the BBC 1Xtra A List as well as being played on KISS FM, Choice FM and Galaxy Network. Go was also featured as Urban Record of the Month by Mixmag.[3]

2010 saw Meleka return with her second release "Miss Me" which was released on 26 September 2010. The music video for the new single caused as much of a storm as the video for "Go" (now "It's Over Boy"), as Meleka is one of few artists within the funky scene known for 'creatively' taking things to another level. The "Miss Me" video saw the revise of Meleka's "ex-boyfriend," who was believed to be killed at the end of the video "Go", imagining that he is seeing her in his day-to-day life.

Meleka has since collaborated with Wiley on "Music is Calling", Loadstar on "Sliders" and Riton on "Inside My Head". She released a seven-track EP entitled The Funkin' 90s in December 2014.
