| Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan is from the Budreal sub tribe of the Dhund Abbasis. Sardar Mehtab's term was cut short by the military coup of 12 October 1999 and he was arrested from his house in Abbottabad.[2] He was falsely accused of corruption in the wheat scandal case and was jailed in Attock Fort.He remained in Attock Fort jail for three years. The first ever case against Pervez Musharraf was filed by his lawyer Mr. Mian Muhibullah Kakakhel Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan in the case of Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan Versus National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and other high Military hierarchy. The petition was numbered as writ petition No. 1 of 2000. General Pervez Musharraf offered Sardar Mehtab his freedom and a powerful role in his dictatorship regime which was refused by the latter. Pervez Musharraf was not able to carry on this injustice as the Supreme Court of Pakistan exonerated Sardar Mehtab of any wrongdoing and ordered his immediate release. | |
Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan (Urdu/Pashto/Hindko: سردار مهتاب احمد خان عباسي) is a Pakistani politician from Abbottabad, and the current Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Formerly, he was Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 1997 to 1999, and Federal Minister for Railways in 2008.[3] He is politically affiliated with Pakistan Muslim League (N). He has served as a senator for five years since March 2003, until he won the NA-17 Abbottabad-I seat for the National Assembly of Pakistan in the 2008 general election.
Education and early life
Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan Abbasi was born on 15 December 1952 in Malkot, Abbottabad District to a Hindko speaking Dhund Abbasi family of Hazara.He passed matriculation from Govt High School, Murree, and graduated from the Sir Syed School in Rawalpindi. He then went on to do his LLB and practiced in the courts of Rawalpindi . Finding the legal profession not to his liking, he joined his father Sardar Muhammad Nawaz Khan's clothing business in Rawalpindi Saddar. His uncle Sardar Sarfaraz Khan had contested in local elections but never won from his single opponent Haji Majeed Abbasi(Late) and so promoted his nephew Sardar Mehtab in Circle Bakote, who was elected for the first time in 1985 as an independent candidate. He became popular among the people of Circle Bakote and is amongst the few politicians who have remained undefeated in their political career maintaining the record for a continuous 28 years.
As Chief Minister (1997–1999)
Mehtab Ahmed Khan became the 16th Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 21 February 1997, taking over from Raja Sikander Zaman, and served until 12 October 1999.[4]
During his tenure as Chief Minister, Mehtab Ahmed Khan approved the Chief Minister Development Plan prepared by Prof Dr M Subhan Qureshi, which was later on updated to Dairy Science Park through two international workshops held at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, in 2011 and 2013, respectively.[5][6][7] The Park has given birth to Peshawar Meat Company,[8][9] which is to be implemented jointly by the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, the Department of Local Government and Rural Development, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Board of Investment and Trade.[10][11]
During the tenure he also invested heavily in Circle Bakote, a relatively poor and underdeveloped area in the Abbottabad District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He electrified the area, provided facilities like telephone lines, water supply schemes, and link roads such as the Kohala–Moolia road, the Sowargali–Boi road, the Birote–Berote Khurd road, and the Osia–Malkot road. He also constructed the Murree–Abbottabad road as a motorway, and upgraded high schools in Ayubia, Birote, and Bakot.
Post-CM political career
Mehtab Ahmed Khan could not contest the general elections in 2002 for National Assembly, and therefore had to settle as a Senator in the March 2003 – March 2008 tenure.
As Senator (2003–2008)
Sardar Mehtab was amongst the few politicians who remained in Pakistan and were an integral part of the party during the exile of Nawaz Sharif. He was elected to the Senate of Pakistan in 2003 holding this office until the 2008 general election.
Member of National Assembly (2008-2013)
In the 2008 general elections, Mehtab Ahmed Khan won NA-17 Abbottabad seat He also won the PF-45 provincial assembly seat, and hence had to vacate both the Senate seat and the provincial assembly seat after the victory, as a parliamentarian can only keep one seat. His son Shamoon yar Khan won this seat. He was elected as the Federal Minister for Railways on the 31st of March 2008 in the initial coalition between the PPP and PML(N) after the elections. Post 2013 Elections
Sardar Mehtab was elected as the Opposition Leader in the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the 3rd of June 2013 and he retained the position until the 9th of April 2014 when he resigned to take oath as the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has convinced Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N)’s senior leader, Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan for governorship of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Sardar Mehtab who earlier excused to take charge of the top of KPK, has been convinced by the Pakistan’s PM and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, sources said [12]
The President of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain, on the advice of the Prime Minister, Nawaz sharif apppionted him as governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, province of Pakistan.He took oath of the office of the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 15 April 2014 in Peshawar[1]
