McAfee Stinger is a freeware[2] on-demand virus scanner utility to remove specific viruses, rootkits, running processes, loaded modules, etc. It is designed as a tool for use by administrators and experienced users to deal with infected systems and not as a general purpose anti-virus program.
It scans registry and directory locations known to be used by malware to avoid long scans. It uses current technology and easily fits on a USB drive. It detects over 6,000 viruses, trojans and variants, including rootkits, a number that increases as threats are added.[3]
Since 2010 Stinger has specifically targeted fake alert threats, a form of scareware.[4][5]
As a free utility, technical support is not offered and there is no warranty and so it is advised not to use on mission critical systems. However, the utility is updated constantly (usually several times per week) and is a valuable tool for administrators and more advanced users. It is not designed as a general-purpose anti-virus program, but as a tool to assist in dealing with infected systems.
