Mbale is a city in Eastern Uganda. It is the main municipal, administrative and commercial center of Mbale District and the surrounding sub-region. The district is named after the town.

Location

Mbale lies approximately 245 kilometres (152 mi), by road, northeast of Kampala, on an all weather tarmac highway.[3] The coordinates of the city are:1°04'50.0"N, 34°10'30.0"E (Latitude:1.080556; Longitude:34.175000).[4] The city also lies on the railway from Tororo to Pakwach. Mount Elgon, one of the highest peaks in East Africa lies approximately 52 kilometres (32 mi) east of Mbale.[5]

Overview

Mbale is home to the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), and also other centres of higher Education like Bugema University, Uganda Christian University, Uganda martyrs university as well as the Moses Synagogue around which most of the Abayudaya live. The population includes members of the Gisu ethnic group, mainly the Bamasaaba and Bagisu, Itesots, Kupsabinys, karimojongs, baganda(from Kakungulus lineage0 etc.

Mbale is known for its limited nightlife, and has a clock tower in the centre of town. An early scene in Casino Royale (2006) is set in Mbale District, but was not filmed there. James Bond (Daniel Craig) himself is not in the scene.

Population

According to the 2002 national census, the population of Mbale was about 71,130. In 2010, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), estimated the population of the town at 81,900. In 2011, UBOS estimated the mid-year population of Mbale at 91,800.[6] In 2014, the national population census put the population of Mbale, Uganda at 96,189.[2]

Twinning

Mbale was formally linked with the town of Pontypridd, Wales through local and regional twinning ceremonies in 2005. The link was intended to associate professionals and organizations in Pontypridd with their counterparts in Africa, under the auspices of the charity known as Partnerships Overseas Networking Trust (PONT).[7]
