Maytown, Queensland

Maytown was the main settlement on the Palmer River goldfields in Far North Queensland. It is now a heritage-listed ghost town.

History

Originally named Edwardstown, the town was settled in the early 1870s. In 1900, the town had a population of 674, nearly two thirds of whom were Chinese gold miners. The town was largely abandoned by 1945.

Heritage listing

The town was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2004.[1]
