The album was written by the band during early 2011 at a beach house in Panacea, Florida.[6] They began recording with Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount on February 24, 2011 and the record was reportedly completed "[the band's] way," not "someone else's way," on April 17.[7] Recording took place at Vinatage Song Studio in Alpharetta, Georgia and at Tree Sound Studios in Norcross, Georgia.[8]
Due to the poor response toward their second album's many co-writers, this album was written solely by the band members. Derek Sanders has stated that they tried to keep all the sounds live and organic during the recording process, including bringing in a real string section.[9]
The album's 12 tracks were whittled down from an alleged 16-17 originally written songs.
Song notes
"Happy Endings Are Stories That Haven't Ended Yet" is a quote by Jane Smith, played by Angelina Jolie, from the 2005 action film Mr. & Mrs. Smith, much like how "Champagne's for Celebrating (I'll Have a Martini)", from their debut album, A Lesson in Romantics (2007), was a quote by John Smith, played by Brad Pitt, from the same movie. "Everything's an Illusion" is a quote from the 2011 film Water for Elephants.
Release
It was announced that ILG would be releasing the album.[10]
The first song off the album "Oh Well, Oh Well" was streamed on Alt Press on July 27. The song was officially released on iTunes on August 1, 2011.[11] The second single, "When You See My Friends," was released on September 9, 2011.[12] "Stay", released on April 4, 2012, had charted at number 26 on the Rock Digital Songs chart in the U.S.[13]
