Mayagüez Mall is a shopping mall located between the municipalities of Mayagüez and Hormigueros. It is the third largest shopping center in Puerto Rico with a total of 1,050,000 square feet (98,000 m2)[1] of retail space, and the main shopping center in western Puerto Rico, followed by Western Plaza also in Mayagüez, Aguadilla Mall and Plaza del Oeste in San Germán. Its main stores include: Sears, JCPenney, Wal-Mart, Shoe Carnival, Old Navy, Marshalls, and Office Max. It also has stores such as: Tous, Clarks, Aldo Shoes, PacSun, SGH, Gordon's, Carter's, Totto, Sony Style, Adidas, Pueblo Supermarket and much more. For dinner has various restaurants such as: Chilis Grill & Bar, Pizza Hut, and Ponderosa Steakhouse. Also there is a heliport within the mall property. The mall is made up of 3 concourses, which connect at a central atrium. The former theater building was demolished in May 2010 and was replaced with a Romano's Macaroni Grill.
History
The mall was opened in the 1972, when two of its current three concourses were opened. During that time, its main tenants were Woolworth's, Walgreens and Sears. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the mall went under extensive renovations, including the construction of its third and largest concourse, anchored by JCPenney. One of the mall's lesser entrances was later expanded to connect to Walmart which opened in the mid 1990s. A Gonzalez Padín department store once co-anchored the Sears concourse, but it closed in the mid 1990s when the parent company went bankrupt. Its former space is occupied today by Sears Brand Central.
Today
Mayagüez Mall today is still the most important shopping hub in western Puerto Rico. The mall, however, has undergone little or no renovations since the 1990s. The lack of renovations has made the mall look dated to the late 1980s when the last major renovations took place.
