Maxim Dondyuk (Ukraine, 1983) is a Ukrainian documentary photographer. He began working as a photojournalist in the Ukrainian media in 2007. In 2011 Dondyuk received Noor-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography in Bucharest.[1] Since 2010 he has worked as a freelancer on his own documentary projects. He has won awards including the Ville de Perpignan Remi Ochlik Award,[2] Magnum Photos ‘30 under 30’ for emerging documentary photographers,[3] finalist of the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography,[4] finalist for the FotoEvidence Book Award,[5] Grand Prix ‘Best Global Health Story’ of Becton Dickinson (BD)’s 'Hope for a Healthy World Photo Competition',[6] and shortlisted in the portraiture category of the Sony World Photography Awards.

Life and work

Dondyuk's projects include ‘Uman, Rosh Hashana',[7] 2008-2012, celebration of the Jewish New Year in one of the biggest centers of Jewish pilgrimage outside Israel, in Uman (Ukraine); ‘The Crimea Sich',[8] 2010-2013, about military patriotic camp for children and future Cossacks; ‘TB epidemic in Ukraine',[9] 2010-2012, Dondyuk opened hushed tuberculoses problem in Ukraine, which managed to reach the national status. Since winter 2014 Dondyuk has documented historical events that happen in his country, Euromaidan in Kyiv, annexation of the Crimea by Russia, war in the East of Ukraine.

Dondyuk collaborates with international editions and online media. His photographs have been published in TIME, Der Spiegel, STERN, Paris Match, Rolling Stone, Photo District News, Bloomberg Businessweek, Russian Reporter, Libération, Polka, 6Mois, Esquire etc. Also he has worked with International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dondyuk’s works are in private and museum collections.
