Matthew "Matt" Porterfield (born October 6, 1977[1]) is an American independent filmmaker. His 2013 feature I Used to Be Darker was premiered at The 2013 Sundance Film Festival. All three of his feature films have had their Baltimore premieres within Maryland Film Festival.

Life and career

Porterfield was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and had formal training at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. The film, Hamilton, made in 2006, was his maiden directorial venture. Apart from directing and screenwriting films, he is involved in teaching screenwriting and production at the Film and Media Studies Program at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland.[1]

His low-budget maiden film, Hamilton, made on 16 mm film with a cast of non-professional actors from Baltimore, proved a "minor miracle", so wrote The New Yorker. The magazine went on to tag the film as "the most original, moving and an accomplished American independent film in recent years".[2]

Considered a sleeper hit, Matthew's, Putty Hill, again reverts to his homeland Baltimore as the film revolves around a small Baltimore community. The film was critically acclaimed for combining documentary and narrative traditions into a lyrical study of the film theme. His latest film, I Used to Be Darker, showcases his ability in bringing "melancholic tones" lifelike on the celluloid.[3]
