Matt Moylan (born 16 June 1991) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who currently plays for the Penrith Panthers of the National Rugby League. Moylan primarily plays fullback.
Early years
Born in Baulkham Hills, New South Wales, Moylan played his junior football for St Clair Comets and St. Patricks before being signed by the Penrith Panthers. Moylan played for the Panthers NYC team from 2009 to 2011.[2]
Playing career
2013
In Round 7 of the 2013 NRL season, Moylan made his NRL debut for the Penrith Panthers against the Parramatta Eels in a 44-12 victory at Penrith Stadium.[3] Moylan since become Penrith's first-choice fullback in 2013, playing consistently well as the Panthers number 1. Moylan scored his first NRL try in his next match in Round 8 match against the Sydney Roosters, losing 30-6 at SFS.[4] Moylan was ruled out of a match against the Wests Tigers in Round 13, due to second-tier salary cap issues.[5] Moylan was available for selection the next week due to the injury of fullback Wes Naiqama in the Panthers 24-12 loss to the Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium in Round 14.[6] Moylan finished his debut year in the NRL with him playing in 13 matches and scoring 3 tries and kicking 2 goals for the Panthers in the 2013 NRL season. Moylan was named the Panthers 2013 Rookie of the Year.
2014
In February 2014, Moylan was selected in the Panthers inaugural 2014 Auckland Nines squad.[7] In Round 3 against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Moylan kicked a sideline goal to win the game for the Panthers 18-16 at the death when winger Kevin Naiqama scored in the 79th minute to tie the match up at match at 16-16 all at Penrith Stadium.[8] Moylan was selected to play for City Origin in the City vs Country Origin match at Dubbo’s Apex Oval. Moylan played at fullback in the 26-26 draw.[9] In Round 18 against the Brisbane Broncos at Penrith Stadium, Moylan a field goal in the last minute to win the match for the Panthers 35-34.[10] On 9 September 2014, Moylan extended his contract with the Panthers from the end of 2015 to the end of 2017.[11] On 29 September 2014, Moylan was selected in the Australian train on squad. On the same day, he was named as fullback for the Prime Minister's XIII side taking on Papua New Guinea.[12] On 15 October, Moylan was called into the Kangaroo's 2014 Four Nations squad to replace Jarryd Hayne who had announced that he was leaving rugby league to chase his dream of playing American Football in the National Football League.[13] Moylan didn't play a match in the series.
2015
On 13 February 2015, Moylan was selected at fullback for the NRL All Stars in the 2015 All Stars match at Cbus Super Stadium. The NRL All Stars lost 20-6 over The Indigenous All Stars.[14]
