Matt Minto (born 18 December 1990) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer for the Central Queensland Capras of the Queensland Cup. He previously played for the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League. He primarily plays halfback, five-eighth and fullback.
Background
Born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Minto played his junior football for North Knights before being signed by the Central Queensland Comets in the Queensland Cup. As a youngster, Minto took part in an Australian Institute of Sport rugby league training camp.
Playing career
At the end of 2007, Minto signed with the Penrith Panthers.[2] He was a part of the Panthers' inaugural NYC squad in 2008,[3] but returned to Queensland due to homesickness before he could play a game.[4]
In 2009, Minto signed a 2-year contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He played for the Bulldogs' NYC team in 2009.[5]
In 2010, Minto rejoined the Central Queensland Comets, after finding out his partner was pregnant,[6] while still contracted to the Bulldogs.[7]
In 2011, Minto joined the Eastern Suburbs Tigers.[8]
In 2012, Minto joined the Mackay Cutters while doing a pre-season with the North Queensland Cowboys.[9]
After winning the premiership with the Mackay Cutters in 2013, Minto attracted the interest of National Rugby League clubs, Newcastle Knights, North Queensland Cowboys and Wests Tigers. However, a phone call from Knights coach Wayne Bennett swayed Minto to sign a train and trial contract with the Knights.[10] After impressing in the pre-season, Minto's Knights contract was upgraded from train and trial to a full-time 1-year contract.
In Round 2 of the 2014 NRL season, Minto made his NRL debut for the Knights against the Canberra Raiders.[11]
At the conclusion of the 2014 NRL season, Minto was released from the Knights.[12]
On 3 November 2014, Minto signed a contract with Queensland Cup side Central Queensland Capras for 2015.[13]
Personal life
Minto is the nephew of former Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys player Scott Minto.[14]
