Materials Today is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal and website that was established in 1998. It covers all aspects of materials science and is published by Elsevier. The editor-in-chief is Stewart Bland. The journal principally publishes invited review articles, but other formats are also included, such as primary research articles, news items, commentaries, and opinion pieces on subjects of interest to the field. The website publishes news, educational webinars, podcasts, and blogs, as well as a jobs and events board.
Scope
Materials Today is self-described as a "gateway to materials science".[1] Contribution formats for the journal are review articles (2500-3500 words), current research articles (2500-3500 words), book reviews (650-700 words), comments (750-900 words), cover features (750-900 words) and feature comments (2500-3500 words). The peer-reviewed sections of the journal are "reviews" and "current research".[2] Topical coverage, both in the journal and on the website, consists of research advances (includes future trends), contributors' personal perspectives, broad scientific interest articles, specific reviews for materials researchers, technical aspects of materials research, commercial applications, significant emerging technologies, and significant potential applications for new materials.
History
Materials Today was established in 1998 as a collaboration between Elsevier and the European Materials Research Society (EMRS). The founding editor was Phil Mestecky. Materials Today was distributed free of charge to EMRS members and to anyone else who requested a subscription. However, it was not until Cordelia Sealy took over as editor that the publication began to develop as a fully audited controlled circulation magazine. A complete overhaul of design, layout, editorial policy, and advertising opportunities followed. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2013 impact factor of 10.850.[3] As of 2012, the journal transitioned into a fully open access publication.
