Master Shake (often shortened to Shake or Cup) is a fictional character on the Adult Swim animated television series Aqua Teen Hunger Force (also known by various alternative titles). Master Shake is a lazy, selfish, arrogant life-sized anthropomorphic milkshake, who is a pathological liar and frequently torments Meatwad and annoys the rest of the cast for attention. Although his full name is Master Shake, he is mainly called "Shake" and in "Last Last One Forever and Ever" he is known as "Don Shake". Master Shake was created and designed by series creators Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro, and is voiced by Dana Snyder.

Like the other main characters, Frylock and Meatwad, Master Shake first appeared in the Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode "Baffler Meal", and then made his first official appearance in the show's first episode, "Rabbot". Master Shake was originally voiced by Dave Willis in "Baffler Meal" and was performed as a live action person by Jon Benjamin in the season six episode "Last Last One Forever and Ever". Master Shake has appeared in several video games and albums relating to the series including the 2007 film Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. Shake has also made cameos in promotional material and other media outside of the series.

Master Shake was created and designed by series creators Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro. Like the other main characters of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Frylock and Meatwad, Master Shake first made a rough-cut appearances in the Space Ghost Coast to Coast season eight episode "Baffle Meal."[1][2] Master Shake, along with Frylock, Meatwad and Carl Brutananadilewski, made his first official appearance in the pilot episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, "Rabbot," which premiered unannounced on December 30, 2000, along with the original "stealth pilot" of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law and two episodes of Sealab 2021.[3] Although Master Shake was originally voiced by Dave Willis in "Baffler Meal,"[4] and was performed as a live action person by H. Jon Benjamin in the season six episode "Last Last One Forever and Ever,"[5] voice actor Dana Snyder provides Master Shake's voice throughout the entire series [6][7] and every other official appearance Master Shake has ever made. Snyder had originally auditioned for the role of Master Shake after a friend of Dave Willis recommended him for the role.[8]

In a 2009 interview, Snyder said, "I'm into old showbiz stuff like Don Rickles, which I think reflects in Master Shake, of course. I always inject little secret nods to my old comedic heroes..."[9]

Co-creator and co-writer Willis said, "The guy who's the main voice of Master Shake, Dana Snyder, is really, really talented, and helped us take that character in a totally different direction."

Master Shake has appeared in almost every episode of the series. He does not appear in the season five episode "Sirens" or the season ten episode "Spacecadunce", and only makes a brief speaking cameo in the season five episode "Robots Everywhere".[10][11][12]

Design

Master Shake is a living giant white drinking cup with a big pink bendy straw. Although Master Shake does not have a nose, arms or any reproductive organs, he does have two yellow hands with only four fingers connected to each side of him. Although Shake does not appear to have legs, in "Kangarilla and the Magic Tarantula" he refers to his base as "my one thick ankle" and as his "cankle" in "Wi-Tri." Just like Meatwad and Frylock, Shake occasionally wears clothing but does not typically wear them on a normal basis.

Shake is always seen this way except in "Baffler Meal," in which Shake has the same basic look only he has the logo for the "Burger Trench" — no hands and appears shorter and more square shaped. In the episode "Shake Like Me," Shake is bitten by a "radioactive black man," changing his appearance: his straw grows longer and more crooked, he acquires lips, an afro and an amulet of himself, and his teeth get letter diamonds in them that read "Thugs Life." In "Last Last One Forever and Ever" he is portrayed by H. Jon Benjamin, who wears a white jumpsuit, yellow gloves and a backwards pink baseball cap.

Shake's inner contents

It is not completely clear what is inside of Shake. In "Rabbot," he appears to be filled with a pistachio shake that comes out of his straw; in the episode "Carl," his skin is ripped off and appears to have muscles; in the episode "Diet", he appears to be full of blood when all of it is vacuumed out of him; in the episode "Super Bowl" he is capable of having diabetes and cancer; and in Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters he appears to have ribs and other bones when his insides are briefly seen with Frylock's "Ultra-X-Ray." In "Baffler Meal" his insides appear to be a chocolate shake which he refers to as his "chocolate inner being." In the episode "Rabbot Redux," Master Shake calls out "Shake Power, Activate!" while he excretes a whitish substance out of his straw. When Meatwad inquires about the flavor, Master Shake replies, "It's the flavor of none-of-your-damn-business." In "Hands On a Hamburger," Shake is able to detach his hands from his body, leaving them affixed to a giant cheeseburger to win a contest. In another episode, he jumps from the roof and misses Carl's pool, making his lid fall off. Nothing falls out, but he's unable to breathe. In "One Hundred," Shake is shown to be a costume worn by his actual voice actor, Dana Snyder, attached with suspenders. He is also the only one that seems to be aware that the Aqua Teens are part of an 11-minute television program. In the same episode, they switch to a Scooby Doo-style animation with ridiculous names, such as Meaty Meaty Moo for Meatwad. Shake himself is renamed Captain Pistachio, confirming that he is likely pistachio flavored. In the episode "The Creditor," he is shown to have a spinal cord and large skull after it is ripped from him by the Creditor.

Role in Aqua Teen Hunger Force

From 2000 until 2010, Master Shake, along with Frylock and Meatwad have lived in a suburban neighborhood in New Jersey, next door to Carl Brutananadilewski. They've since moved to an identical neighborhood in Seattle, Washington.[13]

Like Frylock and Meatwad, Shake was a detective for the first three episodes, but inexplicably quit by "Mayhem of the Mooninites." Throughout the series Shake has had a series of different jobs such as a super hero, a song composer, a fast food server, a Boost Mobile sponsor, a United States Marine, a writer in "Last Last One Forever and Ever", and a rapper. With the exception of being a detective, Shake's careers typically only last one episode.

Master Shake has been shown to be a talented cook, flash frying cheese-injected beef ("Revenge of the Trees"), a four-cheese lasagna ("Lasagna"), owning an Alton Brown saucepot to make Balsamic Reduction ("Global Grilling") and starting a restaurant ("Hand Banana"). He is said to "have no flow", by SKORGE.[14]

Shake is mean-spirited, extremely rude, cruel, selfish, lazy, arrogant, egotistical, & vain. He often tells pointless lies to get out of doing any work, and often boasts of having fantastic skills he clearly does not have. He often plays cruel tricks on Meatwad. Shake has even gone to extreme lengths, such as committing suicide to haunt Meatwad as a ghost, or putting Meatwad's pet cat into a microwave. Master Shake is usually always at odds with Frylock. His wrongdoings usually catch up with him in the end resulting in great humiliation or him dying in some gruesome manner (yet he always comes back the next episode). However, despite his often violent and cruel behavior, he will sometimes express shock at immoral actions committed by other characters, and in at least one instance claimed to have "standards."

Like Meatwad and Frylock, Shake's gender is not talked about, but he's a male (though Frylock claims in the episode "Ezekial" that he has no penis). In the episode "Mail Order Bride" he, along with Carl, were both briefly married to a mail-order bride from Chechnya named Svetlana. Shake does not appear to have a family, but in Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters it is claimed that he, along with Meatwad and Frylock, is a creation of Dr. Weird. The movie also claims their father is a watermelon, and their mother is a nine-layer bean burrito. In 2010 during the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Live" tour, series creator Dave Willis confirmed that Dr. Weird is indeed the creator of Master Shake, Frylock, Meatwad and Chicken Bittle, making them all brothers.[15]

In a Season 5 episode Shake claims that he is 30 or 40 years old (despite acting like a teenager), but "Rabbot Redux" mentions that Shake is almost forty years old. Shake is not depicted as being religious, but in the episode "Der Inflatable Fuhrer" it is implied that Shake is a Scientologist.[16] Shake had previously been depicted as a fan of Battlefield Earth (and a collector of 7-11 Cups related to the movie) in "Broodwich."[17]

Unlike Meatwad and Frylock, Shake doesn't have his own bedroom in the house. The only mention of this in the show was at the end of "Handbanana." Because of this, it's implied throughout the show he simply sleeps on the chair or the floor in the living room in front of the TV. Shake has no official power, except his ability to shoot a substance from his straw, and to occasionally cause items that are released from his hands to spontaneously explode.

Reception

Christy Lemire writes that in the film, Master Shake is "voiced, as always, with wonderful snarkiness by Dana Snyder."[18] Concerning a DVD release, Chris Gaerig describes Master Shake as "easily the funniest character".[19]

In other media

Master Shake serves as a protagonist in Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, a 2007 feature film based on the series. Shake's voice also appears on the film's soundtrack, and the 2009 series album Have Yourself a Meaty Little Christmas. Master Shake is also a playable figure in the video games Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am and The Worst Game Ever on the Adult Swim site.

Aside from his appearances in everything related to the series and "Baffler Meal," Shake has appeared in different episodes on Sealab 2021[20] and Robot Chicken[21][22] . Images of Master Shake can be seen at random times in Perfect Hair Forever. Shake also has a very small cameo as a gold statue in AdultSwim.com's online video games, Five Minutes to Kill (Yourself)[23] , Five Minutes to Kill (Yourself): Family Reunion,[24] and Five Minutes to Kill (Yourself): RELOADED.[25] His acerbic manner featured in a 2007 interview in Entertainment Weekly, where he describes some songs he hates.[26] Master Shake has more appearances than any other character in MF Doom's albums. Master Shake can be seen in an episode of the popular television series Breaking Bad when an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force plays on a television in the background of Walter White's living room. In 2011, a brief clip from the series featuring Master Shake was featured in a commercial for the Samsung Galaxy S II.[27] Voices character Hork on Your Dungeon My Dragon.
