The Route 17 designation was last used in the 1950s north of Danvers. At that time, what is now the Interstate 95 freeway (north of what is now Exit 50) carried the U.S. 1 designation, and the old U.S. 1 was numbered Route 17. Once the freeway received the I-95 designation, the old U.S. 1 route was restored.
There was also an earlier Route 17 in western Massachusetts near Great Barrington.
