Marylands

Marylands is a house in a rural part of Ewhurst, Surrey, in England.

Architecture

The building is recognised in the English Heritage administered statutory scheme as Grade II*, for architecture, rather than so qualifying on the grounds of age. The house is made of Bargate stone sandstone and a green Swedish pantiled roof inspired by Spanish architecture and Lutyens.[1] The two wings are linked by a stone terrace incorporating a Moorish curved pool and the house has many stone and brick embellishments, such as fireplaces and window features.[1] Servants' bells survive.

History

It was constructed by Oliver Hill between 1929-31 for Mr M C Warner. During the World War II the house was let to Colonel Tatsumi, who served for a few early years as Japanese Military Attaché to London and Władysław Sikorski, the Polish prime minister of his government in exile.[1]

In film, arts or literature

It was used as a filming location in Agatha Christie's Poirot in the episode Dead Man's Mirror.[2]
