Marta is a female given name derived from the Hebrew (Judæo-Aramaic) name מַרְתָּא Martâ "The lady", but some sources claim that it was in use even before the establishment of Christianity, meaning "dedicated to Mars".[1] It had the male form "Martinus" in Roman culture. It has been described as a cognate of Martha[2] and as a feminine variation of Martinus.[1]
The name Marta should not be confused with the similar-looking Swedish name Märta, which derives from the Greek name Margaret and means "pearl". [3] The name of the first two persons on the list below is the Swedish name Märta.
