Marshall Curry is an American documentary filmmaker from New Jersey.
Film career
His first feature-length film, Street Fight, followed Cory Booker's first run for Mayor of Newark, New Jersey and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006[1] and a News and Documentary Emmy. His second film, Racing Dreams, tells the story of two boys and a girl who aspire to race in NASCAR and won Best Documentary and was runner up for the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2009. His third film, If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, won the award for Best Documentary Editing at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and earned him his second Academy Award nomination. In 2013 he was Executive Producer and additional editor of Mistaken For Strangers, a film about the rock band The National, which was opening night film at the Tribeca Film Festival. Curry's 2014 feature Point and Shoot followed Matthew VanDyke on his 35,000 mile motorcycle adventure that eventually led him to Libya, where he joined the rebels fighting dictator Muammar Gaddafi. It won Best Documentary at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival[2] and is being released theatrically by The Orchard.[3]
Early life
Curry grew up in Summit, New Jersey. graduating from Summit High School in 1988.[4] He attended Swarthmore College, graduating in 1992[5] having majored in comparative religion.[6] He was also a Jane Addams Fellow at Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy.[7] Before his film-making success, Curry worked as senior producer at Icon Nicholson, a New York multimedia design firm.[8]
Curry lives in Brooklyn, New York.[9]
