Controversy
Trophy scandal
On June 21, 2014, Simonović, then captain of Red Star Belgrade, was part of the scandal after the game in which Red Star Belgrade lost to their arch rivals Partizan in the final series of the Serbian League. Despite Red Star was being considered by media and fans as favorite to win the series after over a decade,[7] Partizan eventually won its 13th consecutive domestic title. The last game of the series was played at the Red Star home court, in which Partizan ended series with 3-1 after overtime.[8] Before the award ceremony, Red Star fans Delije have stolen the championship trophy and Simonović later went into the crowd and lifted it, with fans celebrating that act.[9] This made lot of the people in arena shocked, even some players from Red Star showed disagreement with such act by turning their face and walking away.[10][11] The championship trophy ceremony was eventually held with smaller replica trophy given to Partizan players and staff. The player later denied that he wanted to offend anyone with such act, saying he just wanted to return the trophy on the court.[12]
