Mark W. Yusko

Mark W. Yusko is the Founder, Chief Investment Officer, and Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Creek Capital Management, LLC, an SEC-registered investment management firm that advises pension funds, endowments and wealthy individuals. Yusko is a proponent of the Endowment Model of investing, which favors diversified strategies by asset class and within each asset class in both public and private markets.[1]

Career

Yusko received his Bachelor of Science Degree, with Honors, in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1985. He also received a Master of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance from the University of Chicago. From 1993 to 1998, he was a Senior Investment Director at the University of Notre Dame Investment Office. Yusko left Notre Dame in 1998 to head the endowment office at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1998 to 2004, Yusko was President, Chief Investment Officer and Founder of UNC Management Company. Yusko left UNC to found Morgan Creek Capital Management in 2004.[2]

In 2004, Morgan Creek Capital Management, LLC partnered with Salient Partners LP to start The Endowment Fund. After reaching about $3.5 billion in assets, Yusko served as chief investment officer for the Fund until January 2013, when Yusko stepped down.[3] The Fund's investment advisor, Salient Partners, was quoted as commenting:

"Recent participation in tender offers from the Fund indicates that a meaningful number of investors in the Fund have lost confidence in Mr. Yusko's ability to deliver results consistent with expectations and we believe that a change is warranted."[4]

According to Bloomberg News, Yusko wrote the following in a letter to clients:

“After nearly a decade of working with our joint venture partner in Texas, we found ourselves differing on material aspects of how to best run an Endowment portfolio and run the business, so we decided that a change was appropriate.”[5]

In September 2013, Morgan Creek and Yusko started a new mutual fund, the Morgan Creek Tactical Allocation Fund, the firm's first mutual fund for retail investors.[6] The fund aims to provide long-term total return while utilizing a strategy that seeks lower volatility than a traditional portfolio of equities and fixed income securities. The Fund incorporates a broad set of global strategies across asset classes, geographies and sectors, including directional as well as long-short strategies. Investment ideas will be generated in collaboration with Morgan Creek’s global network of alternative asset managers.[7]

Yusko is a frequent commentator on the alternative investment industry and has appeared on CNBC, Bloomberg TV and other major networks as well as in newspapers including the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.[8][9][10][11]
