Mark Bailey (rugby union)

Professor Mark David Bailey (born Castleford, Yorkshire, 21 November 1960[1]) is the High Master of St Paul's School, London and professor of Later Medieval History in the University of East Anglia. He was previously an England rugby footballer.

Early life and sporting career

Bailey was educated at Ipswich School and at the College of St Hild and St Bede, University of Durham, where he began playing rugby and received a First-Class degree in Economic History.[2] He went on to play seven times for England as a winger. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Suffolk for several seasons. On 16 June 2003, Bailey was honoured with the Palatinate Award for Sport.

At Cambridge, Bailey successfully captained the Varsity side in the 1984 Varsity game, convincingly winning 33-4. Bailey played for many years at London Wasps at both Fullback and Wing, winning the premiership in the 1989-89 season. He also received international honours for England, and was selected for both the Lions and Barbarians invitational sides.

Academic career

Bailey became a schoolmaster and in 1999 was appointed Head of Leeds Grammar School, despite some opposition from the local teachers' union.[3] He led the merger of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls' High School following his appointment as both Headmaster and Chief Executive of the Grammar School at Leeds.[4][5]

On 27 April 2009 it was announced that Bailey would leave the Grammar School at Leeds in April 2010 after being appointed a professor of Later Medieval History at the University of East Anglia and a visiting fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. In January 2011 he succeeded George Martin Stephen as High Master of St Paul's School, London.[2]
