Bunge taught at Luther Seminary from 1985 to 1990, Luther College from 1990 to 1995, Gustavus Adolphus College from 1995 to 1997 and again since 2012, and Christ College at Valparaiso University from 1997 to 2012.[3] She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1986.

From 2003-2008 she co-chaired the “Childhood Studies and Religion Consultation” of the American Academy of Religion. Bunge served on the Society of Biblical Literature's “Children in the Biblical World” section steering committee.[5] She has also written about Christians' responsibility toward the environment.[6]
