- March 1
- – Bombardier announces that it has been awarded a contract valued at €368 million (US$487 million) from Trenitalia to build 150 new E464 electric locomotives to augment the railway's existing orders of 538 locomotives, of which 350 are currently in service. This order is expected to lead Trenitalia to become one of only a few European railway companies with single-model locomotive fleets. The new locomotives, which will be manufactured in Italy, Spain and Poland, are expected to be delivered beginning in February 2008.[1][2]
- March 6
- – Officials with the city of St. Petersburg, Russia, endorse a resolution to begin construction of a new intercity light railway to connect areas to the south of the city center. Beginning with a 26.5 km (16.5 mi) section between Baltiyskaya Zhemchuzhina and the Obukhovo metro station on the Nevsko-Vasileostrovskaya Line, construction is expected to begin in 2008. Extensions to Saint Petersburg State University in Petergof and Pulkovo Airport are planned.[3]

- – A CSX freight train traveling from Buffalo to Selkirk derails in Oneida, New York. Twenty six cars out of the train's total length of 79 cars derailed around 7:00 AM; the derailment led to the explosion of at least one tank car that was carrying propane. As a precaution, the explosion forced the closure of 23 miles (37 km) of the adjacent Thruway.[4][5]
- – Docklands railway station opens, the first new station in Dublin, Ireland since Tara Street Station opened in 1891.[6]
- March 16
- – A fire in Sacramento, California causes major disruptions in both passenger and freight service in the area. The fire caused a trestle owned by Union Pacific Railroad to collapse. Amtrak has been forced to re-route and bus passengers on its California Zephyr service.[7]
