"Manwa Laage" (English: My heart feels this) is a romantic Hindi song from the 2014 Bollywood film, Happy New Year. Composed by Vishal–Shekhar, the song is sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh, with lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil.[1] The music video of the soft and melodic track features renowned actors Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.[2]

Development

On 26 November 2012, director Farah Khan confirmed through Twitter that the first song from Happy New Year had been recorded and it is rendered by Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh. Till then, it was the first time that Singh lent his voice for Shah Rukh Khan, as the song was recorded prior to "Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari" (Chennai Express).[3][4]

Release and success

The first look of the song was revealed through the officially twitter handle of the movie.[5] The music video of the song was officially released on 9 September 2014, through the YouTube channel of T-Series. Along with leading actors Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, the video also featured the other cast− Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani, Vivaan Shah.[2] The full song was later released on music-streaming platforms on 11 September 2014.[6]

Soon after its release, the song received more than a million hits within 24 hours,[7] and crossed two million views within 48 hours.[8] The topic was also trending on various social networking platforms.

Upon release, the song had a direct entry at position 8 in The Times of India Mirchi Top 20,[9] and was ranked at 3rd position in the following week. Later; the song ranked at position 1 for several weeks. The song remained in the Top 5 for more than 13 weeks and remained in the music charts for an over-all 27 weeks thus making it immensely popular among public.[10] It also topped Indian iTunes Chart in the first week of its release.[11] The song entered Top 10 Popular Songs chart at position 8 in the first week.[12] It reached 5th position in its 2nd week[13] and jumped to 2nd position in the next week.[14] The song also made its debut at No. 12 position in the Top 40 Asian Download Charts.[15]

Critical reception

The song received generally positive reviews from critics. Rohit Vats reviewing for Hindustan Times described the song "simple yet soulful", praising the lyrics by Irshad Kamil.[16] Rajiv Vijayakar from Bollywood Hungama complimented Shreya Ghoshal's rendition in the song stating "Shreya is in customary excellent form and is superlative and more" though criticised "loud, synthetic backing music".[17] Surabhi Redkar from Koimoi stated "While Shreya Ghoshal's voice brings out the mush in you, there is also the soulful voice of Arijit Singh to give you the perfect recipe for a romantic song", and picked the song as one of the best tracks from the album.[18] Joginder Tuteja reviewing from Rediff.com felt that the song " is a catchy number and will enjoy a good shelf life", acknowledging Ghoshal and Singh's vocals with Vishal-Shekhar composition and Kamil's lyrics.[19]
