Manuel Velasco Coello (born 7 April 1980 in the capital Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas) is a Mexican politician affiliated to the PVEM. Currently acts as Governor of Chiapas, being the first PVEM politician to win a Governature. He has served on the three legislative levels of Mexico: Local Deputy, Federal Deputy and Senator.
He is grandson of former Governor of Chiapas Manuel Velasco Suárez.
Political career
Velasco entered in politics in 1999, two years later, in 2001 he became Local Deputy for the Congress of Chiapas, being the youngest legislator on a local congress.
Two years later he was elected as Deputy of the LIX Legislature of the Mexican Congress representing Chiapas.[1] Then aged 23 he was the youngest person to serve as Congressman.
In 2006 he left his seat on the Chamber in order to compete as Senator, winning the seat in the July elections. Then aged 26, Velasco assumed as the youngest Senator on Mexico's history.[2]
In 2012 Velasco won the gubernatorial elections, assuming office later on December.[3]
He has been criticized by the independent media, for allegedly being a project similar to Enrique Peña Nieto, due the posters with his face and name that have been published by the PRI in Mexico City, while he is the governor of Chiapas and has nothing to do with Mexico City, claiming that the PRI is trying to sell his image for the 2018 presidential elections.[4]
Personal life
Manuel Velasco Coello is son of Leticia Coello Garrido and José Manuel Velasco Siles (deceased).
He is currently married to singer and actress Anahí.[5]
