Manly Sea Life Sanctuary (formerly Oceanworld Manly[1]) is a public aquarium located in Manly, Australia. Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary features sharks, giant stingrays, sea turtles, little penguins and other marine life. Manly Sea Life Sanctuary also allows guests to take part in Shark Dive Xtreme, where they can swim with grey nurse sharks over 3 meters long.[2]

Experience animal conservation in action at Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary and take an active part in their rescue, breed and protect program. They successfully breed some incredible local species; are passionate about rescue, nursing animals back to health and releasing them back into the wild; and endeavor to protect their natural habitats.

Check out Penguin Cove where you can discover a colony of Manly’s iconic little penguins and their importance to the shores of Manly. Join interactive talks and feeding demonstrations and be charmed by ‘Sea Biscuit’, rescued green sea turtle, or amazed by huge sharks and stingrays. See Murdoch and Freckles, two captive bred grey nurse sharks, who have been brought together to continue Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary's successful breeding program. Meet the team and journey through the waters as you learn how you can protect the marine environment. Get hands-on and discover more about our local environment at the interactive rockpool, where you can touch a shark egg or hold a crab.

History

The sanctuary originally opened in 1965, as Marineland. It was refurbished and reopened in 1989 as Underwater world.[3] It was purchased and renovated by Coral World International, and re-opened as Oceanworld in 1992. After its renovation, the aquarium boasted the longest aquarium tunnel in the world, at 110 metres (361 ft). The aquarium was sold to the Sydney Aquarium Company (later Sydney Attractions Group) in 1999 to be operated as a branch of the Sydney Aquarium.[4] In February 2008, Village Roadshow Theme Parks acquired the Sydney Attractions Group.[5] In December 2010, Merlin Entertainments acquired the Sydney Attractions Group division of Village Roadshow Theme Parks.[6] On 28 June 2012, the attraction officially relaunched as Manly Sea Life Sanctuary following a renovation which saw the addition of the Penguin Cove exhibit.[7]
